Wonderfully staged and you will intelligently dialogued, it will have no great problem when you look at the life style down the extremely unappealing name.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Flick Bulletin said “The film motions within an instant pace, the fresh conversation are slick and you can characterisations generally effective. The latest film’s publisher and you will movie director, Robert Rossen, creates an excellent multidimensional chess online game, having mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, his workplace (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), an excellent cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may an effective scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever brother (Nina Foch) worked on local casino and you may dated a great corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The fresh new caustically epigrammatic software, the fresh new cast’s suavely managed body language regarding love and you may hazard, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you will stylishly cocky images (together with their governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious yet , in depth spectacle a hidden vintage of the genre.” [ 10 ]

Cobb, just like the a police inspector, along with within the score . Even though the patch pursue a common development, this new characterizations are new and the activities sufficient to help you overbalance. Dialog try terse and you can relevant, preventing the psychological, phoney reach. Unusual digital camera angles come-along now and then in order to escalate attract and you can momentarily stop the eye. Solid teamplay of the Robert Rossen, increasing because the movie director-scripter, and Milton Holmes, totally new blogger and affiliate producer, together with supports making this a softer design.” [ 11 ]

It is mainly an issue of watching Mr. Powell undergo their paces fashionably if you’re a huge cast of actors and you may stars bring your conventional support. Evelyn Keyes takes on the great absolutely nothing woman who brings about the new best in your and you may Ellen Received is the sleek and slinky vixen who gets him with the jams. Thomas Gomez try oily due to the fact villain and Lee J. Cobb does a new able trip once the a weary police inspector just who eventually closes the situation.
